Corporate Teamwork: Three Tips To Help Your Employees Hit A Homerun

Rita Spencer

Your employees are players on a team working toward a common goal – the running of a successful business. Just like any team, your employee-players must learn how to work together to develop solutions, overcome adversity, and find the winning plays so your company can thrive and grow.

The following three tips can help you get started on developing an all-star lineup:

What's Your Role?

As the owner or manager of the team, you have two roles to choose from – team captain or coach. Your choice will depend partly on the culture of the company and partly upon your own personality and job responsibilities.

The team captain approach means you are down in the trenches, working side-by-side with your team. You are both a peer and a leader. This approach works best when you have past experience with the jobs your team is responsible for. It's especially useful if group projects are common in your industry.

Coaches don't necessarily take part in the day-to-day tasks of the employee team. Instead, they are there to advise, mentor and guide the team. If you have job responsibilities separate from the team's responsibilities or if you have no prior experience in your team's tasks, coaching is likely the best role to take.

Does Your Team Have the Right Uniform?

No athletic team would take to the field without their matching uniforms. Not only does it help the fans recognize them, a uniform also fosters a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. In the business world this may mean matching polo shirts, aprons, vest or hats, depending upon the industry. Even as the team captain or coach, you should be in uniform. Your uniform may vary slightly, such as in color, but it should still clearly mark you as a member of the team.

As an added benefit, your customers will be able to quickly spot your employees when they are all in matching corporate apparel, just like fans can quickly spot their team at the ball game.

What's Your Team Goal?

Every team needs a goal, whether it's to win the Superbowl or to exceed last year's sales numbers. As the captain or coach, you don't want to arbitrarily assign the goal. Instead, hold a team huddle and get everyone's input on the goals. You may be surprised that your team has even loftier goals than you were originally planning on. When everyone helps set your company goals, they will feel more invested. This increases the chances of success and a winning season.
